5 Things We’ve Done To Prepare For Travelling (Health-wise)

I’d like to talk about what we’re doing to keep ourselves healthy before we travel. We are doing everything we possibly can to make sure our bodies have more of a chance of fighting off any nasty things that come our way when we’re on the road.

Seeing as it’s only 5 weeks until we jet off, we’re really focusing on nothing but our trip!

Here is a list of 5 things we’re doing to prepare for our trip health-wise:

1. Exercise

A lot of the time we will be engaging in activities that require some level of fitness. Whether it’s walking around all day with heavy backpacks, climbing a mountain or swimming in the sea; neither of us want to ruin anything by slowing down and running out of breath. Not only would that be annoying for the other person, but it would be embarrassing too! Between us we are going for short jogs, long walks and going to the gym frequently. We have both realised that we need to worry about our cardiovascular health and make it a priority by being physically active regularly.

2. Vaccinations

This is an obvious one which I hope no one would put off for the sake of having more money. We have spent a couple of hundred pounds on getting all the necessary vaccinations we need to be immune to all of the diseases that are present in Southeast Asia. Click here to see a price list for the vaccinations we’ve had.

3. Regular medication – big no-no

Obviously the most important point of this article is to stay healthy, but by doing so we are steering clear of being on regular medication such as medicine for high blood pressure, anemia etc. Me personally, I’ve been on SSRI’s for a few months for anxiety and now I am desperately trying to get off of them. Not only do I not want to be going through the effort of having to remember to take them every day, I don’t want to be taking them. I believe I’ll be fine and dandy when I’m away from all of the stresses of daily life here. That’s why I know I’m going to be off them by the time we leave. Also, doctors can only really prescribe a certain amount of medication at a time, so you’d find yourself running out and spending money on them when you’re away from home.

4. Having a regular sleeping pattern

No more late nights and waking up at mid day anymore. We need to really prepare ourselves to be getting up and about as early as possible so we can make the most of seeing the world! Having a regular bed and wake time schedule can not only make you feel happier and more energetic, but it can also prevent insomnia and other sleep problems that a lot of people happen to encounter at some stages in their lives.

5. Eating Healthy

To really build up a healthy immune system, we are trying to fit as much healthy food into our diets as we possibly can. Breakfast is a very important meal especially. This is because eating a healthy breakfast everyday can help aid healthy digestion and also can lower cholesterol levels. If you don’t eat breakfast, your body will go in to starvation mode and due to changes in your brain, you will start to crave more fatty and carb-filled foods. We do not want this to slow us down when we’re away! Other than that we are trying (our best, honestly) to eat lots of fruit and veg, and drink plenty of water everyday.

Thank you for reading! We hope you stay as healthy and happy as you possibly can before and during your travels.
